Online harassment has always been a problem that existed without a solution. Many have been unaware of the prevalence of abuse directed primarily at minorities, but in the past year this has become more of an international topic, gaining media coverage as well as spawning conversations about how to mitigate and prevent abuse. While preventing abuse is a complex topic, open source tools have been developed that have mitigated targeted abuse. Creating software to mitigate abusive content can be a difficult task, as classifying unwanted data is more complex than most filters, such as anti-spam. In this talk, we will discuss the cultural context of online harassment as well as different techniques for writing software to help protect users.
