This talk will discuss the current state of the World Wide Web as a platform for the development and deployment of applications, providing answers to the following questions: * How does web application development differ from the development of traditional desktop applications? * How easy is it to shift from one environment to the other? * What pieces are missing from the web in this regard? * What does the web provide that desktop application environments do not? * is it possible for an application to be deployed in both environments simultaneously? Attendees will take away: * an understanding of the fundamental components of the state-of-the-art of the web platform. * when it makes sense to consider writing a web app instead of a desktop app. * pointers to the basic technologies required to make rich, desktop-like web applications.
