Android is the world's most popular computing platform, with over 1 billion devices out in the world. At its core, it is also a viable Free Software platform, even though the vast majority of Android devices are saddled with proprietary software. Debian and its derivatives are already a preferred platform for developing Android apps. Replicant provides a fully free distro of Android, F-Droid provides the free app store, lots of free apps can replace the Google apps. This is the final piece of making Android a fully free platform. This will then be the first time that there is a truly free software Android SDK since Google ships the Android SDK binaries with a proprietary, non-free license, even though the source code is Apache-2.0 licensed. In this talk, we'll cover the work we have done so far, and the plan for completing the file bits in time for the release of stretch. We will describe our packaging approach, and hope to get lots of feedback and suggestions about how to best represent the SDK to Debian users, how best to manage security updates, and more.
